How can we improve our assertiveness?

A tool I would like to share with you is Rating your Assertiveness. This table, which you can see below, helps build our awareness and provides us with a platform from which we can improve. It highlights the relationships where we are more, or less, confident in our assertiveness, for example, with work colleagues, authority figures, friends, etc. It also helps us understand in what forms of expression we are more, or less, assertive, such as saying ‘no’, asking for help, expressing anger and giving criticism.

This awareness puts us in the driver’s seat. The tool shows us where we are more, or less, confident in expressing ourselves. It is the starting point for improvement. It means we can be specific with our energy as we develop our assertiveness. It means that we can borrow strengths of assertiveness from certain situations to boost our ability in other circumstances.
